- Ancona drapes gracefully over the hills
surrounding its harbour. It is the largest town and the administrative centre
of Le Marche and like Venice, Trieste and Dubrovnik, is one of the ancient
maritime powers of the Adriatic. It is one of the few mainland sites where
you can see both the sunrise and the sunset over the sea. The port has the
elegant Arch of Trajan which is the symbol of the city and one of the finest
Roman buildings of its kind. There is so much to see in the city but not to
be missed are the Lazzaretto, Porta Pia, the Church of San Ciriaco, the Piazza
della Repubblica with its Opera House. South of Ancona starts the dramatic
Conero Peninsula with its beautiful coastline and Nature reserve.
