Fermo
Fermo is perched on a hill very close to the sea and is a quiet town with strong local traditions. Built on the summit of the hill is the Duomo della Madonna surrounded by centuries old trees. this was once the acropolis of the Picene and Roman cities. The Roman cisterns are of particular interest – thirty enormous water storage tanks built underground between AD 40 to 60 to supply the city. The Piazza del Popolo is the city centre since Roman times and the favourite meeting place of the people. Fermo has many beautiful churches and museums which make it well worth a visit.
