- Loreto is one of the most important Roman
Catholic shrines in the world, tracing its origins back to the 13th century.
Its hugely imposing fortress-like church holds the house of Mary and Joseph,
apparently transported to the location by four angels. Recent scientific studies
suggest that the stones of the house do come from Nazareth. The town is perfectly
equipped with accommodation, restaurants and shops selling religious articles
to cater for the many thousands of pilgrims each year. Even if you are not
of the Catholic faith it is somewhere not to be overlooked.
