The city of Urbino is world famous as one
of the principal centres of the italian Renaissance and a Unesco humanity
world treasure. It was created almost singlehandedly in the 15th century by
Duke Federico da Montefeltro who summoned the most accomplished figures of
that age to fulfil his dream. The Palazzo Ducale is considered the most beautiful
in Italy – a fairytale castle and it now houses the principal museums
of the city. The Galleria Nazionale della Marche is one of the most important
art galleries in Italy and should not be missed. Urbino also has the distinction
of being the birthplace of the artist Rafael and some of his works can be
seen here.
